The spools and spindles

Archaeological Museum

Type: Reperti archeologici
Room: Reperti archeologici

Description

Numbers 12 and 13 indicate typical weaving and spinning tools, namely spools and spindles. They are made of purified and unpurified pottery with impasto of various colors ranging from dark gray to light brown and bucchero. These are finds dating back to the seventh century BC. The spindles are cylindrical in shape with straight walls and on some can be seen x-shaped incisions, others are truncated cone-shaped with connected walls mostly of dark gray or black purified impasto. The spindles are composed of clay impasto of glassy paste or light brown and dark red impasto, with flattened poles. Some are spherical in shape, others are truncated cone-shaped with slightly convex walls and straight bases. Some have embossed decorations and rims. The presence of weaving and spinning tools in the burials is indicative of the desire to mark, through them, the role associated with this craft practice, characteristic of women. In fact, large quantities of spools and spindles are found in female burials of high status, indicating the possibility of the lady having ample amounts of yarn and perhaps even coordinating the work of several people.
