Frascole Stele

Description

Stele In gray sandstone dating from the 6th century B.C., found around 1960, a short distance from the church of San Martino a Frascole in the municipality of Dicomano. Trapezoidal shape with crowning seven-lobed floral decoration set on two S-shaped tendrils, horizontal and opposed, with drop-shaped fillers . Below this, enclosed by a frame, we can admire the bas-relief of a figure seen in profile depicting a bearded man facing left. The figure has a rounded and pronounced cap, an elusive profile ending in a pointed beard. He holds a lituo in his right hand, while he carries his left arm back with an open hand resting on his hip. The uneven surface prevents us from recognizing details about the robe or anatomical details, except for swollen thighs and small buttocks. At the base we note the parallelepiped-shaped interlocking. The stele, similar to the previous one, differs in size, decorative apparatus, and the depiction of a priest rather than a warrior, but similar in belonging to a high social rank dictated by the element held and carried aloft exhibiting spiritual authority.
