The Bucchero

Archaeological Museum

Type: Reperti archeologici
Room: Reperti archeologici

Description

If you look in the center at the top of this showcase you can see two visibly recomposed very dark gray bucchero vessels, both dating to 625-600 BCE. Bucchero refers to a type of dark black or gray pottery that is light and thin with a polished surface. The typical bucchero coloration was achieved through a special process during firing called oxidation. In the foreground is a recomposed and integrated olla with tapered rim, ovoid body and ring foot. The shoulder is decorated with two parallel grooves. Behind, however, we have a recomposed openwork stand with a straight rim and rim, cylindrical body, and pronounced shoulder decorated with four parallel horizontal grooves. The walls are slightly concave and decorated with openwork motif consisting of two rectangular windows alternating with ovoid windows.
