Description

The term Hellenistic Age denotes the approximately three centuries following the death of Alexander the Great, ranging, therefore, from about the middle of the 4th to the end of the 1st century BC. In this period there is a true Hellenization of artistic language throughout the Mediterranean basin. This phenomenon is not escaped by the Italic world, which indeed becomes one of its driving centers through Etruria and Magna Graecia. In inland northern Etruria, thus in the Florentine-Fiesole countryside, in Mugello and in Val di Sieve in particular, there are in this period, profound social transformations, which strongly affect the life and organization of the inhabited centers. Here, then, in Mugello and in Val di Sieve there is a shift from a society, dating back to the archaic period, led by a rural aristocracy linked to a few urban centers in the territory, to the birth of other settlements located preferably on hills and heights, in a strategic position for viability and defense. These include Frascole, Poggio Colla, Monte Giovi, but also Nevale, in the present municipal territory of Palazzuolo sul Senio.
