Stele of St. Agatha

Archaeological Museum

Type: Reperto archeologico
Room: Reperti archeologici

Description

Stele dating from the 6th century B.C. Found in Sant' Agata, municipality of Scarperia, in 1888 in a field owned by Aiazzi just outside the village. Made of yellow sandstone, reassembled from two fragments. The Stele of typical trapezoidal shape, features a bas-relief of the profile of an armed man facing left. This one wears a helmet with a pronounced cap without a crest and holds small round shield in his left hand. In the right, however, we find a spear held at rest. The whole is then enclosed by a frame with a parallelepiped shaped frame at its base. On the upper part of the frame we note a floral decoration with five lobes set on two tendrils made to them, horizontally bound in the center by a triple band. The warrior depicted differs from the others in the helmet without a crest, and the small shield, which seem to recall the typical features of the 'equipment of the Italic warriors.
