Travignoli Stele - Detail A

Archaeological Museum

Type:
Room: Reperti archeologici

Description

The Travignoli Stele presents at the top the scene of a symposium, or banquet. We can see on a sort of crib, called a kline, two people, each with his left forearm resting on a double pillow. The individual on the left, turning his head toward the other, holds out with his left hand a cup on a foot, a kantharos or kylix. The other, however, places his right hand on the former's shoulders. On the far left we notice a young cupbearer in profile facing to the right; his left hand is in front of his chest, while his right hand holds a simpulum, a kind of ladle. On the table are two large vases and seated to the right of it, on a backrest chair, is a female figure in profile, facing left, with her left arm bent and resting on her legs. Below the kline, in the center, is a hen in profile, facing right. It, at the time, represented the concept of rebirth and was sacrificed to the Night Goddess.
