The early peopling of Poggio Colla and the archaic pottery

Archaeological Museum

Type: Reperti archeologici
Room: Reperti archeologici

Description

The earliest evidence on the frequentation of the Poggio Colla area comes from an area of the acropolis and is archaic pottery, impasto and bucchero, that is, black pottery whose color is given by the specific firing process, datable between the 7th and 6th centuries BCE. The majority of the sherds refer to drinking vessels, probably documenting ritual banquets. The quality of the bucchero is high and there is evidence of vessels related to elite consumption. In fact, among the pottery recovered are a bowl with pierced stem and an ornithomorphic askos testifying to the high rank of the owners of the dwelling structure, some remains of which were found. Find number 7 is precisely the 'askos, which is a closed-form vessel suitable for pouring a liquid from a narrow-rimmed spout. This particular one is made of bucchero and is in the shape of a water bird with incised decoration.
