Stele (fragment)

Description

Fragment surveyed at Casa del Nespolo in Vierle, in the municipality of Londa. Composed of gray sandstone dating to the 6th century BC. It was originally inserted in the wall of a stable owned by Marchesa Maria Luisa Dufour Berte. The fragment found was pertaining to a trapezoidal funerary stele similar to the one at Trebbio that you can see in #2, and the one at Frascole in #3. This one we observe is the lower part of the stele where we can see the feet and part of the legs of a figure depicted in profile, incident to the left. This could be an armed man, given the presence of a pole in the far left part. The scene is enclosed by a frame composed of a concave tab band and a lath. This fragment has the same provenance as the Londa stele marked with the number 1, and thus this leads us to suppose the presence of a necropolis in the area of the find recovery, perhaps referable to an elite group locatable in the Sieve Valley around the 6th century BCE.
