Description

Bicycle built by Necharsulm , Germany , racing model dating from 1905 . It mounts the rear brake only , considered much more efficient than the front . The German company was founded in 1873 by Christian Schmidt and Heinrich Stoll, two young mechanics who registered the company name Mechanische Werkstätte zur Herstellung von Strickmaschi-nen (Mechanical workshop for the construction of knitting machines). A gradual decline in demand in the knitting machine sector was the basis for the need to diversify production: therefore, beginning in 1886, the factory also began to engage in the production of bicycle velocipedes. The Germania model in particular was very popular with customers. Its fame also crossed German borders, and sales reached a good level abroad as well. Neckarsulmer Strickmaschinenfabrik was the first company in Baden-Württemberg to engage in the production of bicycles. Beginning in 1888, production expanded further with the introduction of a real bicycle. Noteworthy were the Gazelle and Pfeil model-li, which were also successful. However, it was precisely from 1898 onward that a downward trend began to appear for the bicycle as well, which is why, before long, the successful bicycle production was joined by the motorcycle production. The first model produced and marketed was introduced in 1901 The two-wheeler sector was the one that made the Teutonic brand universally known, thanks in part to the remarkable successes the company achieved in motorcycle competitions. Within a very few years, even long before the outbreak of World War I, the factory became the world's leading motorcycle manufacturer, outperforming already widely established industrial entities such as Peugeot.
