Museum of Cycling Gino Bartali

Type:
Room: Bicicletta

Description

The bike on display here, again the result of the partnership between Bartali and F.lli Santamaria of Novi Ligure, belonged to rider Giulio Bresci of Prato who , as Gino's domestique , participated in the 1953 Giro D'Italia . Giulio's main victories as a professional were two stages and the final classification of the Ronde de France in 1946, two stages at the Tour de Suisse between 1947 and 1948, the Lugano stage of the 1947 Giro d'Italia (the first in the history of the pink race with a foreign finish) in 1947 at the Tour de Romandie in 1948. He finished five times in the Giro d'Italia in the top 10 (third in 1947 behind Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali) and was twice second in the Tour de Suisse Bicycle equipped with Campagnolo's first wire derailleur, the famous "Gran Sport." This type of gearbox would direct the entire subsequent history of the racing bicycle; it is the system by which today's gearboxes still work .
