Description
"We have for report of an antique of his school, eh'è made for GiovanVittorio Soderini a head of a Jupiter greater than natural, which then came into the hands of Martelli." The attribution to Giambologna was based on this passage by Baldinucci, which despite its not good state of preservation, would also seem sustainable on the stylistic level. More accomplished is the dating hypothesis, given the antiquing taste of the 'work. In Inghirami's time it was thought to be "one of Giambologna's earliest la vori," while Soldini recalls that "it was modernly restored." The iconography of bearded Jupiter is typical and frequent, despite having no other attributes
