Type: statua
Room: Il Viottolone
Description
Caneva recalls that the sculpture was placed here in 1775 to replace Vincenzo Danti's "Honor Wins Deception" now in the Bargello: in fact, it is mentioned by Cambiagi as early as 1757. The figure rather faithfully traces models of ancient statuary, even in the fullness of the modeling and the type of the head. Indicated as a Neapolitan work by Caneva, it is definitely Andromeda, daughter of Cepheus, chained to the rock as a punishment by Poseidon after her mother Cassiopeia took pride in her daughter's beauty. She was rescued by Perseus.
