Satyr with dolphin

Boboli Garden

Type: scultura
Room: Fontana del Carciofo

Description

This work depicts a "Satyr" holding a dolphin, from whose mouth flows water that falls into a basin; the sculpture is part of the scenogr aphic "Artichoke Fountain" and is flanked by a Nymph with fish. The present sculptures are the result of a substantial 1908 restoration: "Nin fa" and "Satyr" had been "remodeled almost all in lime and marble dust." Instead, the original sculptures must have been seventeenth-century and carved by Domenico Pieratti (Medri 2003, p. 147, no. 29; SBAP, f. 234)
