Author: Giovan Battista Caccini
Type: statua
Room: Giardino del Cavaliere
Description
The God is depicted according to the most typical canons of ancient statuary, standing, flanked by his proper attributes. Caccini's important activity in the restoration of ancient marbles in the Grand Ducal Gallery seems to have been particularly influential in his production. As with the 'Fiora,' his current pendant, the provenance of the Jupiter, not present in Lamberti's view (18th cent.) and with the Cavaliere's palace, is unknown: perhaps it was placed in the front lawn decorated by various sculptures, recalled by 18th-century texts. The present restoration has highlighted its pictorial characters of the head and the austere clarity of the surfaces, far from the more mannered taste of the walkway sculptures, which show a greater closeness to the figure of St. Alexis (ca. 1594)
