Boboli Garden

Author: Giovan Battista Caccini
Type: statua
Room: Il Viottolone

Description

The statue is already recorded as the work of Caccini by eighteenth-century sources, placed there. On the other hand, there is no information about the dating, perhaps to be considered coeval with the two seasons executed for ponte a Santa trinità. Given the scant bibliography on the artist, it is not possible to better specify the commission. The allegory of Autumn interprets the image described in Ripa's Iconologia, published in 1603, in which a female figure "of virile age is recalled, for it is called the virility of the Year for being disposed the earth to render all fruits."
