Abbey of San Godenzo

Type:
Room: Presbiterio

Description

The mosaic representing the XXXIII canto of Paradise of the Divine Comedy: Christ crowns Mary Most Holy around some saints. In the lower right corner Dante Alighieri and Beatrice are represented. It was made by the Cassioli firm in 1929 for the 900th anniversary of the Abbey and to celebrate the Lateran Pacts. Previously in its place was a fresco by Andrea del Castagno now in ruins. The mosaic also commemorates Dante's passage here in the Abbey on June 8, 1302 for the "Convention of the Exiles."
