The Holy Family

Abbey of San Godenzo

Type:
Room: Presbiterio

Description

Oil painting about 2.20 m wide depicting the Holy Family with St. Joseph and seven saints. The composition is very scenic, with a horizontal arrangement of the characters paying homage to the Holy Family among the clouds of Paradise. On the left are St. Sebastian and St. Theresa of Avila with a guardian angel, while to the right of the scene for the viewer are five male saints: St. Philip Benizzi (among the founders of the Servants of Mary), St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Philip Neri and St. Anthony of Padua. The painting was located near an altar in the left aisle dedicated to St. Joseph. It is first described in 1820 although it is referable to the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries and by the hand of a Florentine painter influenced by Anton Domenico Gabbiani.
