Type: statua
Room: Prato delle colonne
Description
On June 15, 1611, work formally began on the renovation of the Boboli Gardens, commissioned by Cosimo II (Capecchi 2008, p. 5; ASF, Scrittoio delle Regie Possessioni, f. 4118). One of the first works commissioned for the new cycle was the statue of Vulcan. Chiarissimo Fancelli was commissioned to make the sculpture on September 13, 1611 (Capecchi 2008, p. 32; ASF, Scrittoio delle Fortezze e Fabbriche Medicee, f. 123, c. 154). In February of the following year, the sculpture was still a work in progress (Capecchi 2008, p. 32). For Pizzorusso the work was certainly related to the "Grotticina di Vulcano," which disappeared between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (Pizzoruss o 2003, p. 213)
