Description
On October 28, 1626 Cosimo Salvestrini, Raffaello Curradi and Bartolomeo Rossi, sculptors active in Boboli, request the Grand Duke and the Tutrici to be allowed to make some commissions "to get by in the profession of sculpting." On December 9, 1627, Bartolomeo Rossi requested the Grand Duke to be allowed to "restore some statues that go in Boboli." Rossi was entrusted with the restoration of an antique torso, which he then used to make the pair of "Adonis and Venus." The Group of "Adonis and Venus" was paid to Bartolomeo Rossi 107 scudi on September 26, 1630 . The group, "an allegory of unrequited sensual passion," was originally placed around the Vasca dell'Isola, where there were other depictions of Olympian love.
