Shepherd with bagpipes

Boboli Garden

Author: Giovan Battista Caccini
Type: statua
Room: Vasca dell’isola

Description

This sandstone sculpture depicts a shepherd with a bagpipe. The 'work is located in one of the niches surrounding the "Island Basin." The sculpture was made around the first quarter of the 17th century; unfortunately, there is no precise information about the author, although Pizzorusso attributed the sculpture, on stylistic grounds, to Giovan Battista Caccini . On April 10, 1775, in an accounting note of the Scrittoio delle Fortezze e Fabbriche Lorenesi, mention was made of some works that were to undergo cleaning and restoration, and among these works is a Shepherd in the act of playing a bagpipe; for Gabriele Capecchi this note refers precisely to the work in question, which at that time was placed near the wall facing the Vasca dell'Isola
