Boboli Garden

Type: statua
Room: Anfiteatro

Description

Around 1550 Tribolo had devised a spacious "verzura" amphitheater for the Boboli hill, taking advantage of the hollow formed by a stone quarry dating back to medieval times (Capecchi 2003, p. 38). In 1630 Ferdinand II, while working on the improvement of the Reggia, re took a project already sketched out by Cosimo II: the construction of a masonry teatr o where the teatro di verzura was. In 1740 the architect Jado t made new changes to the Amphitheater, transforming the stalls into parter re and completing the opera house with five statues from d al Casino di San Marco. These works must have included the sculptur e depicting "Marsyas," which was placed in one of the stone b igia niches around 1740 (Caneva 1982, p. 38; Capecchi 2003, p. 39). Unfortunately, we have no certain information about the author of the work, which should probably be traced to the Florentine sphere (17th century) (Caneva 1982, p. 38)
