Description
Ceres, maternal deity of the earth and fertility, tutelary deity of crops, is also considered goddess of "birth" since trees, flowers, and fruit are all believed to be her gifts. She presides over the cultivation of the fields and is often depicted as a beautiful but stern matron with a crown of ears of corn on her head, a torch in one hand and a basket of fruit in the other. Ceres is Mother Earth and, together with Proserpine, is linked to the underground cult of those deities symbolizing life and fertility.
