Bernardo Daddi Polyptych

Abbey of San Godenzo

Type:
Room: Presbiterio

Description

On the central altar of the chancel stands out a work that represents the oldest painting in the church. It is the polyptych on panel by Bernardo Daddi, one of Giotto's main pupils. The painting is dated 1333 and arrived in the abbey in the spring of 1922 , after it was originally painted for the Benedictine women's monastery of San Niccolò di Cafaggio in Florence. Flanking the Madonna and Child in her arms, from left to right are Saints John the Baptist, Benedict, Nicholas of Bari, and John the Evangelist.
