Description
The Neptune Basin was created in 1777-1778 in place of a nursery. Water is collected here that irrigates the entire garden and has its source further upstream, below the Knight's Garden. In the center of the basin stands the Neptune Fountain, with a statue of the sea god emerging from a rocky outcrop on which naiads and tritons are also found. The main statue is the work of 1571 sculptor Stoldo Lorenzi, and the fountain is called by irreverent Florentines the "Fountain of the Pitchfork" or "of the Fork" because of the trident wielded by Neptune in the act of striking. Surrounding the fountain are sloping grassy terraces that replicate the shape of the amphitheater below.
