Author: Domenico Pieratti
Type: statua
Room: Vasca dell’isola
Description
The sculpture depicts Love about to strike a heart with a hammer; this sculpture is part of the iconographic program Cosimo II wanted for the so-called Fountain of Venus, the work was to be accompanied by three other sculptures of similar subject introducing the theme of Venus and Love . On September 26, 1618, plaster sketches of the sculptures depicting "Amore" were delivered to the Grand Duke, but it was not until May 24, 1622, the day the marble was ordered for the sculptors, that work on the works began. Through a careful reading of archival documents Gabriele Capecchi has reconstructed that the Pieratti brothers made both the statue in question and the sculpture of "Amore che apre un cuore con una chiave"
