Game of Pentolaccia

Boboli Garden

Author: Giovanni Battista Capezzuoli
Type: gruppo scultoreo
Room: Vasca dell’isola

Description

The sculptural group of the "Game of the Pentolaccia" depicts a blindfolded young man attempting to smash an earthenware piñata with a pole; to his right is another young man, seated on a log, who watches the scene amused. This marble group is part of the "Rustic Games" that decorated the Boboli Gardens as early as the 17th century. The work in question was commissioned from Giovan Battista Capezzuoli around 1775 at the behest of Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine, as attested by the down payment paid to the sculptor on August 21, 1778
