Description

The mummified body of St. Gaudentius, a hermit monk of the order of St. Basil who fled Campania because of persecution and took refuge here in the 5th AD with some companions. In 855 AD his body was miraculously found buried in the locality of "the Company." After his body was found it was transferred here and around his burial was built first a parish church then the Abbey in 1028: entrusted until 1492 to Benedictine monks, then to the Order of the Servants of Mary, finally after the Napoleonic suppressions to diocesan priests. The monastery was destroyed during World War II.
