Serene stone pulpit dated 1529

Abbey of San Godenzo

Type:
Room: Navata centrale

Description

The pulpit has a circular shape with the parapet divided into five mirrors. It was commissioned by Servite Gioacchino Signorini, an esteemed theologian who played a primary role in the Tuscan family of the Servants of Mary. Signorini who died in 1555 and his dedication is engraved on the edges of the circular motif of the first panel adjoining the entrance space in the pulpit itself. In the adjoining one we see carved the monogram of the Servants of Mary and the underlying date of execution, while near the corners are four rosettes. In the mirroring toward the right, on the other hand, we see the monogram of Christ IHS in the manner of St. Bernardine of Siena surmounted by three cherubs and two more rosettes at the bottom corners. In the mirroring toward the right aisle the motif of the second panel with the monogram of the Servants is repeated.
