The historic center of Florence coincides with the area within the line of the walls built in the 14th century, when the city began to develop the economic and commercial power that, in later centuries, reached its zenith. This area of the city is home to the most important monuments and museums. The core of the historic center is Brunelleschi's Dome; this is flanked in Piazza del Duomo by the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto's bell tower and the Baptistery. Moving northward from the square, one encounters the monuments associated with Cosimo the Elder, progenitor of the Medici family: Palazzo Medici- Riccardi and the Basilica of San Lorenzo with the Medici Chapels. Going further, one encounters the Convent of San Marco, with Giotto's masterpieces, the Accademia Gallery, which preserves Michelangelo's authentic David, and Piazza Santissima Annunziata, characterized by the harmonious Loggiato Degli Innocenti designed by Brunelleschi. From the Dome, moving, however, southward, we reach the political heart of the city: Piazza della Signoria, with the Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery. Near this area is Piazza Santa Croce with the splendid Basilica of Santa Croce. Crossing the world-famous Ponte Vecchio, you reach Palazzo Pitti, since the 16th century the residence of the Medici and the Hapsburg-Lorraine families. Also in Oltrarno are the frescoes by Masaccio and Masolino in the Brancacci Chapel.
